Ya know - guys really do have it tough when it comes to
"popping the question." They need to get a ring, figure out
how and where, possibly call the girl's father... the list goes on. They
have to make sure it is special because everyone always asks "how
did he ask?" to the girl. If the story is unromantic, it's just not
a good thing. So, the pressure is on. He has to make it romantic and special
... often while having one knee in the dirt. Here's how Stamps proposed.
He'd been planning on asking me to marry him. On the last
Wednesday in January, we went and bought a fairly simple ring. Nothing
too elaborate - a white gold band with (and here's where I really need
a picture) some markings on it. So, I knew he had the ring - hence I knew
it was just a matter of time before he would propose.
That night, I remembered that he had really been wanting
to go to the beach the following Saturday. It didn't take a rocket scientist
to put "beach" and "ring" together to equal "he'll
propose on Saturday at the beach." I did my best to not let on that
I had a darn good idea when and where he was going to ask the question.

The following night, Thursday, I arrived home
to find a dozen red roses and a box of chocolates on my dining room table.
The thought "Yep, Saturday it is" flashed through my brain. According
to him, he was trying to throw me off the trail. He suspected I'd figured
out that Saturday was THE day (since he knows that "stupid" is
not a word that describes me) so he was trying to make me think "Oh,
maybe he'll ask today" by giving me roses. Nice attempt, but it did
not work. :-) |
Friday was an interesting day.
It had been raining all day. This being Portland, that's not terribly surprising.
However, the rain was saturating the ground and causing flooding all over
the place. He found out that the road to the beach was several inches under
water. Soo... he started to freak out just a little bit. He and I decided
that we'd go to the Zoo instead for our Saturday activity.

Now, I knew that this was disappointing to
him -- but I was sure that somehow, he would suggest another place to go
afterwards that would be more romantic. But anyway, I dutifully pulled up
the web page for the Oregon Zoo to find out when it was open. As I did,
I saw him put a fancy red box (like a jewelry box but bigger, almost like
a mini treasure chest) on my table. He had me open it -- and inside I found
a very pretty miniature glass globe. Very cool. Once again the thought "Yep,
it's tomorrow. We're getting engaged tomorrow" went through my head.
According to him, he was hoping that I would think that the ring would be
in the box and think "Oh! Is he proposing now??" On a side note,
I love the movie While You Were Sleeping. Just like the main character's
father, I received "the world." |

Saturday. :-) I woke up that morning thinking "This
is it. Today is the day." Kind of exciting.

I looked outside - the weather was sunny at my place.
When Stamps showed up, he said that he'd called the Department of Transportation
and found out that the roads to the beach had dried up overnight (the
flooding had gone down) - so could we PLEASE
go to the beach? I consented and he followed up with "Can we bring
Mikey??" (my dog) I'll admit that was a strange request but
thought "Hey, it's his proposal. If he wants my dog there, that's
fine."
We drove out to Cape Kiwanda - somewhere south of Tillamook
- on the Oregon coast. It rained pretty much the whole drive, which was
a little surprising to me given how sunny it had been at my house. Sometimes
it was raining fairly hard actually. Stamps later confessed that he was
rather nervous about that. Just how romantic is it to propose in the pouring
rain?? However, as we got to the beach, the rain stopped. As we walked
along the beach, some of the blue sky poked through the clouds -- and
the sun came out.
The sky went from the top picture to the bottom one within
about 10 minutes. Neat, huh?

We let Mikey run off-leash and he proceeded
to go up a big sand dune. Well, this was why Stamps wanted Mikey there -
to provide an excuse to make me have to CLIMB this big sand dune to the
"secret place" on the other side. In the time it took the two
of us humans to go up once, Mikey went up and down (and side to side) probably
7 or 8 times. He was in heaven, that dog.
We got to the top and it really is pretty up there.
|
| When we got to where we could see the "secret
place", Stamps asked if it was totally obvious why he'd wanted to come
to the beach. As mentioned before, of course it was! He told me that he'd
called my Dad the night before to ask for permission to ask me for marriage.
The following conversation took place.
Stamps:
(something to the effect of "I love your daughter. I want to marry
her and I'm calling to get your blessing on that action.")
Dad: "I have a
few questions for you. Where does my daughter want to be married?"
Stamps: "She says in the Portland Temple."
Dad: "Where do YOU want
to marry my daughter?"
Stamps: "Any temple she wants is fine with me."
Dad: "That is the correct
answer. Enjoy getting engaged and married."
After relating the above conversation, he got on one knee
and signed "Will you marry me in the temple?" I responded that
I would, he pulled the ring from his jacket pocket and we became officially
engaged.

I'm not sure exactly where Mikey was during
the actual proposal. He was off exploring something I guess but came back
when we were ready to head back down. We walked back to the beach and along
some of the rocks. As you can guess from the picture, Mikey got himself
good and wet. So, we stayed in town for a bit while he dried off. As we
got in the car and started to leave, it started raining again and rained
all the way back home.
Our timing at the beach was perfect.
